反アパルトヘイト運動の中心として活躍したネルソン・マンデラ元大統領が9日（日）から入院している。昨年12月以降で4回目の入院だ。
ところがこの事態に乗じて、心ないデマが拡散する事件も発生している。
米国CNNのテレビ番組ピアース・モーガン・ライブ（Piers Morgan Live）などで有名なジャーナリストピアーズ・モーガン（Piers Morgan）氏の偽アカウントが「マンデラ氏死去」とツイートしたところ、全仏オープンで優勝したばかりで400万人以上のフォロワーを持つラファエル・ナダル（Rafael Nadal）がその情報をリツイートしてしまったのだ。

モーガン氏は自身の公式アカウントで偽アカウントをフォローしないように呼びかけた。

ナダルは、「マンデラ氏死去」がデマだと気づいた後に、該当するツイートを削除。続いて、情報が間違っていたこと、また、マンデラ氏の無事を願う趣旨のツイートを投稿した。
マンデラ氏は現在94歳。7月18日に95回目の誕生日を迎える。回復を期待する声がある一方で、かなりの高齢であるマンデラ氏に対して「回復を期待している。だが、家族は彼を楽にしてあげるべきだ」との報道も南アでは見られる。
